Job Description


We are looking for an experienced chef who is looking for their next challenge in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. Set in the beautiful Arthur's Pass, this role will see you cooking for guests at a stylish nature lodge set in the Southern Alps. With the room to truly develop your fine dining skills, we are looking for someone who wants to take themselves to a new level in this fixed-term opportunity.

This role will see you cooking for clientele from all over the world as they come to experience the best that New Zealand has to offer. You will be providing high-level cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner services, while also cooking a wholesome evening meal for staff. Sourcing high-quality, local ingredients is a core value for the lodge and you will therefore be expected to create a seasonally appropriate menu from local ingredients where possible.

As the head chef, you will not only be responsible for the second chef but also will provide direction to and coordinate waitstaff to ensure smooth and efficient kitchen and restaurant service. Accommodation is also provided onsite in an ensuite unit for a reasonable charge, only a five-minute walk from the lodge.

Key tasks include:

  • Preparation and cookery of guest breakfast, lunches, and dinners.
  • Adapting meals to meet guests' dietary requirements.
  • Management and coordination of kitchen and wait staff.
  • Effectively control food costs and limit wastage.
  • Ordering, supply, and safe storage of all kitchen stock and equipment.
  • Communication of any operational issues with Management.

Requirements:
Ideally, you will have a background in fine dining with a talent for producing top-quality meals. You will have the knowledge required to work independently. The following key skills and attributes will be highly regarded:

  • A strong chef background in a similar role ideally with at least 2 years experience in a Head Chef position for a luxury establishment.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and people management skills.
  • Food safety and/or culinary qualifications.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience working in small teams/remotely.
  • Trustworthy and reliable with a passion for the hospitality industry.
